Who Are You?
In 2019, vibraphonist & composerĀ Joel RossĀ issued his Blue Note debutĀ KingMakerĀ to peer acknowledgment and wide critical acclaim. An introduction to his longstanding outfit Good Vibes, the album received nods from The New York Timesā Best Jazz of 2019, NPR Musicās Jazz Critics Poll and Rolling Stoneās 2019 Jazz Listenerās Guide. Now, expanding the breadth of his expression with his second releaseĀ Who Are You?, the young artist has actualized his sound.Ā Ā
āThis record is a culmination of our maturing ā as people, as a band, within the music ā itās about figuring out who we are,ā saysĀ Ross.Ā Who Are You?Ā features familiar Good Vibes associatesĀ Jeremy CorrenĀ on piano,Ā Immanuel WilkinsĀ on alto saxophone andĀ Jeremy DuttonĀ on drums, and introduces their newest collaborator,Ā Kanoa MendenhallĀ on bass. HarpistĀ Brandee YoungerĀ is also featured on five of the albumās tracks.Ā
Inspired by communication through storytelling ā a method he absorbed, in part, working with such creative forces asĀ Ambrose Akinmusire, Marquis HillĀ andĀ Makaya McCravenĀ ā and with input from producerĀ Walter Smith III, RossĀ assembled the albumās narrative in halves. Tracks 1-7 provide setting, as well as character introductions; tracks 8-15, plot twists. Each artist advances the spirit of risk-taking, while maintainingĀ RossāĀ vision for story structure.
