Following his 1968 Blue Note debut On Broadway, Hammond B3 organistĀ Reuben WilsonĀ returned toĀ Rudy Van GelderāsĀ studio in March 1969 to record the follow-up Love Bug. This time out producer and Blue Note co-founderĀ Francis WolffĀ put Wilson at the helm of a dynamic quintet withĀ Lee MorganĀ on trumpet,Ā George ColemanĀ on tenor saxophone,Ā Grant GreenĀ on guitar, andĀ Leo MorrisĀ (later known asĀ Idris Muhammad) on drums. The result was one of the standout soul jazz dates of the late 60s, a funky six-song set that featured deep-grooved Wilson originals including āHot Rod,ā Back Out,ā and the title track āLove Bugā alongside cover versions of some of the biggest R&B hits of the day likeĀ Gamble and HuffāsĀ āIām Gonna Make You Love Meā (Diana Ross & The Supremes and The Temptations),Ā BurtĀ Bacharach and Hal DavidāsĀ āI Say A Little Prayerā (Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin), andĀ Isaac Hayes and David PorterāsĀ āHold On, Iām Comināā (Sam & Dave).
This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is all-analog, mastered byĀ Kevin GrayĀ from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
